Jodie Vicenta Jacobson Melrose was born in 1977 to artist–farmers in Western Colorado, her familial heritage informing early interests in art, film, dance, philosophy and geology. After earning degrees at Hunter College (MFA) and Colorado College, Jodie was appointed curator at the Horticultural Society of New York, where she specialized in contemporary art exhibitions organized around plants. Currently, Jodie enjoys an active career as an internationally exhibiting visual artist with gallery representation in New York and Tokyo, Japan, and her work has been on display at institutions such as the Yancey Richardson Gallery, MoMA PS1 (both New York), the Foil Gallery (Tokyo), and the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art (Israel) and published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and Artforum among others. Passionate about education, since 2010 Jodie has been faculty at Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts. Teaching, motherhood, art, exhibition–making and creative collaboration with her husband and creative partner David culminated in Studio Melrose.
David Melrose was born in Greenport, NY in 1977. His mother was an artist, and his father ran a family marine construction business in Oyster Bay. David's interest in art and building led to an education in sculpture and apprenticeships under notable contemporary sculptors Robert Berks and Dennis Oppenheim. As founder of custom construction firm DMDC/2100built, he worked on projects at The High Line and, with architects Deborah Berks & Partners, at 432 Park. After years of design and build service, the trust and respect of owners and contractors of many of Manhattan’s elite residences (from historical homes on the Upper East Side to celebrity enclaves in Tribeca) turned into productive, reliable relationships, and eventually to the collaboration that is Studio Melrose, where custom builds and renovations, artistically designed spaces and forward-thinking style combine to form a unique identity as space makers. David operates his workshop at 49 Grand Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn where he lives with his wife and creative partner Jodie, their daughters Ava and Zoë, and dog Luna.
